Maximum Vehicle Length for Cars with Trailers Without Overhang

Legal Framework for Vehicle Length in Germany

In Germany, the maximum permissible length for a vehicle combination consisting of a car and a trailer without overhanging load is regulated by the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) and the Road Traffic Act (StVG).

General Regulations

Vehicle Length without Overhang

According to § 32(1) StVZO, the maximum total length of a vehicle combination consisting of a car and a trailer without overhanging load may not exceed 18.75 meters (61.5 feet).

Some exceptions to this rule apply, such as for certain special-purpose vehicles, such as fire engines or mobile homes.

Overhanging Load

If the load on the trailer overhangs the rear of the vehicle combination, the maximum permissible length is reduced to 20 meters (65.6 feet) according to § 32(2) StVZO.

Consequences of Exceeding the Maximum Length

Exceeding the maximum permissible vehicle length can result in fines and other penalties, including:

  • Fines up to €200
  • Driving ban of up to three months
  • Confiscation of the vehicle
