What is a Chassis?

Definition of Chassis

A chassis is the supporting frame of a structure such as an automobile or television.

Components of a Chassis

The chassis of a vehicle typically includes the following components:

  • Frame
  • Wheels
  • Engine
  • Mechanical parts

In the case of an electronic device, the chassis may also include the circuit components and mounting hardware.

Types of Chassis

There are two main types of chassis:

  • Body-on-frame: In this type of chassis, the body of the vehicle is attached to the frame.
  • Unibody: In this type of chassis, the body of the vehicle is integrated with the frame, creating a single structure.

Body-on-frame chassis are typically used in larger vehicles, such as trucks and SUVs, while unibody chassis are typically used in smaller vehicles, such as cars and motorcycles.
