JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Mount Ibu volcano in Indonesia's North Maluku province erupted on Monday, sending dark clouds into the sky for five minutes.

The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre (PVMBG) reported that the eruption began at 10:21 AM local time and produced an ash column that rose 5,000 meters (16,404 feet) above the volcano's crater.

The eruption caused no immediate reports of damage or injuries. However, PVMBG has raised the alert level for Mount Ibu to Level 3, indicating that the volcano is in an escalating state of unrest.

Local authorities have advised residents living near the volcano to be prepared for further eruptions and to follow instructions from emergency services.

Mount Ibu is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes. It has erupted more than 20 times in the past century and is known for its explosive eruptions.
